3 G’s of Perpetual Momentum

Momentum

In each of our lives, and our individual pursuits, we face obstacles that impede our progress. For the longest time, whenever any of these obstacles would surface and appear to block my forward movement, I would either believe that I wasn’t supposed to follow that particular path, or at the very least, I would beat myself up for having failed in some way.
I never understood momentum and the power it can have.
In the world of physics, momentum comes as a product of the mass times the velocity. The bigger something is or the faster something moves, the more momentum it has. If you have both of those things, then you have a momentous object.

I’ve realized that we build up momentum in our lives as well. Whenever we achieve any goals or start trying to change our lives, you could say we are building up momentum. For those of you who don’t know, Newton’s First Law says that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Things that have a lot of momentum become very difficult to stop or change direction because of their inertia.
Here’s what this has to do with you.
You can have perpetual momentum in changing your life. You can build up more and more momentum forever, day by day. It’s not complex, but it’s not always easy. If you want to try, I’ll give you three G’s that can help you.

But now let’s talk about the G’s.

Gains

The most important aspect of this mindshift is focusing on things that move the needle. Most people hear gains and immediately think about weightlifting. Well, the idea behind gains is seeing muscle growth. It’s a ruthless way of thinking about it, but you focus on actual growth. When you change your life, you want to focus on gains. This means you don’t confuse busy with productive.

This helps you have perpetual momentum because you are constantly focusing on things that actually change your life. You don’t get distracted by things that make you feel like you are doing something, but instead you constantly do the right things.
To get this kind of mindset, you need to evaluate the things you do and the results they bring to you. If you are at home watching TV all the time, then you can’t be surprised if that’s exactly where you are 15 years from now. If you are trying to lose weight, you can’t just go to the gym. You have to sweat through agonizing workouts.
If you want to improve your financial situation, you can’t just look for coupons and use that to get out of debt and then become wealthy. You need to increase revenue and decrease costs.
Focus on the things that move the needle.
Focus on gains.

Grit

Now that you are determinedly focused on doing the things that actually move the needle, you add grit. This means you adopt a single mindedness. Your mind won’t be singly focused on anything but tenacity. There’s a secret:
When you don’t give up, nothing can stop you.

So adopt a mentality that you will continue pushing for your goals forever. I mean forever. Let me put these two things together. You adopt a mindset to focus on the things that actually change your life and you adopt a mindset that you will be constantly striving no matter what.
These two will create the effect that, over time, you will see some sort of forward movement in your life. They prepare you perfectly for the next aspect of gaining perpetual momentum.

Gratitude

Add gratitude to the mix and immediately the whole equation becomes so much more powerful.
In this, be grateful for any move forward. Use that gratitude to help prevent any steps backward, but also accept forward movement for what it is: progress.
When you add this gratitude to the two previous steps, you get perpetual momentum.I had this realization. Obstacles may try and stop me, people might even try and stop me, but if I recognize every single step forward as a step forward and determine that I will never stop stepping forward, as long as I don’t step backward, I become unstoppable.

Remember how we talked about mass times velocity equals momentum. Well, when you are constantly moving your feet towards your goals, that begins to create velocity. When you focus on the steps that actually move you towards what’s important and you gratefully accept any step forward without going back, that helps to build mass. It makes you have momentum in the things you try to accomplish.
By building this momentum you hedge yourself against the possibility that you might have an off day.
Let’s be clear though. You will have times when you step back. Sometimes you fall back and feel you’ve lost all of your momentum. That’s the best part of these 3 G’s. You might have slowed down, but your mass, the amount of things you’ve accomplished, remains and all you need to do it get going again.

Action Items

Start building momentum by doing the following things. Adapt them to your individual circumstances. Find ways to build perpetual momentum to push past the inertia of “insurmountable” obstacles.
1. Take an inventory of your goals and values. Measure your actions against those goals to see if they are taking you there or not. Determine the actions that will. Do this on a piece of paper so that your thoughts are recorded.
2. Identify ways that you can do those extremely valuable actions from action item #1 every day so that you are building up velocity. Determine that you will never stop moving your feet.
3.Take a minute to think about your individual progress. Don’t think about where you want to be. Think about how far you’ve come. Determine to practice thinking about your progress regularly.

Doing these three things will help you start to build momentum and create a very powerful force to change your life.

Unstoppable

Mass times velocity equals momentum. Momentum in changing your life means having established patterns that allow you to easily move forward and upward towards your goals. You build perpetual momentum through Gains, Grit, and Gratitude. Every person can create momentum in their life and in their pursuit of change just by doing these things.
